The next layer up in the stack is Platform as a Service (PaaS). PaaS goes a step further than IaaS by providing not just the raw infrastructure, but also a complete development and deployment environment in the cloud. This includes the operating system, middleware, database services, and development tools that software developers need to build, test, and run their applications. By using a PaaS offering, developers can focus entirely on writing their application code, without having to worry about the underlying infrastructure management, patching, or scalability. This dramatically accelerates the application development lifecycle. Examples of PaaS include services like AWS Elastic Beanstalk, Google App Engine, and the platform capabilities of Microsoft Azure. This layer is a massive enabler of agility and innovation, allowing companies to bring new software products and services to market much more quickly.

The highest layer of the cloud computing stack is Software as a Service (SaaS). This is the model that most people interact with every day. In the SaaS model, the cloud provider hosts and manages a complete, ready-to-use software application and delivers it to customers over the internet on a subscription basis. The customer simply logs in and uses the software, with no need to worry about installation, maintenance, or upgrades—the provider handles everything. This model has revolutionized the software industry. Iconic examples of SaaS include Salesforce for customer relationship management (CRM), Microsoft 365 for productivity, Netflix for entertainment, and Dropbox for file storage. This model has made sophisticated enterprise-grade software accessible and affordable to businesses of all sizes, and it represents the largest and most visible segment of the overall cloud computing industry. Together, IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS form a complete and powerful ecosystem that is powering the modern digital economy.
