In addition, the Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) has provided a USD 22.4 million loan to offset the higher upfront cost of electric buses compared to traditional diesel vehicles.

Through this investment, Langs Bus Lines—together with Student Transportation—plans to replace nearly half of its existing diesel fleet by 2026, serving approximately 9,000 students across Sarnia, Strathroy, London, and Woodstock.

Beyond vehicle procurement, the transition requires substantial upgrades to depot infrastructure. Charging facilities and grid enhancements must be installed across five sites in Southwestern Ontario. To ensure operational readiness, a portion of the ZETF funding has been allocated toward a feasibility study focused on infrastructure planning and long-term fleet management.

Environmental and Health Impact

The electrification of Langs Bus Lines’ fleet is expected to deliver significant environmental benefits. The replacement of diesel buses with electric alternatives is projected to reduce more than 4,200 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions annually—equivalent to offsetting the annual energy consumption of approximately 550 homes.

Electric school buses also eliminate harmful diesel exhaust emissions, which are linked to respiratory issues in children and contribute to localized air pollution. Given that school buses travel thousands of kilometers each year, this transition will substantially improve air quality in school zones and surrounding neighborhoods, while offering a quieter and more comfortable ride for students.

This initiative supports Canada’s net-zero emissions target by 2050 and reflects the growing prioritization of sustainable transportation solutions nationwide.

Part of a Broader North American Movement

Langs Bus Lines’ electrification effort is part of a wider shift across Canada and the United States. In the U.S., more than USD 1 billion in federal funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is being directed toward electric school bus adoption through programs such as the Clean School Bus Program.

Some jurisdictions have taken even more aggressive action. For example, New York State has mandated that all new school buses be electric by 2027, highlighting the urgency of fleet electrification. Public transit systems are undergoing similar transitions, reinforcing the role of electric mobility in decarbonizing transportation networks.

Challenges and Market Outlook

Despite strong momentum, challenges remain. Electric school buses typically cost around USD 350,000 per unit, compared to approximately USD 100,000 for diesel buses. However, these higher upfront costs are increasingly offset by lower fuel expenses, reduced maintenance requirements, and fewer mechanical repairs over the vehicle’s lifetime.

Infrastructure readiness remains another hurdle, as communities must ensure sufficient grid capacity and charging availability. Nonetheless, continued federal incentives, advancing battery technology, and rising environmental awareness are accelerating adoption.
