The upcoming mainline Resident Evil title is revisiting a key element that made 2017’s Resident Evil 7: Biohazard so memorable — its deeply unsettling atmosphere filled with creeping dread. Resident Evil Requiem successfully recaptures this chilling vibe, while maintaining the series’ signature feel, based on a brief segment I recently experienced.

The portion I played felt incredibly polished, almost like a finished demo ready for release, reminiscent of the Kitchen demo from RE7 or the Maiden demo from Resident Evil Village.

Fans of the series might have already glimpsed parts of this demo, which is currently showcased at Gamescom. The experience begins with the protagonist, Grace Ashcroft, finding herself strapped upside-down to a gurney, disoriented and filled with fear. Grace soon manages to free herself, checks her medical chart for clues — but finds nothing — and begins to cautiously explore the dim, deserted corridors of Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center, a location that ties back to the Resident Evil Outbreak titles.

Visually, Resident Evil Requiem holds its own, possibly surpassing the latest Capcom releases. What truly stands out is the exceptional lighting design: rooms vary from pitch black shadows to harshly illuminated spaces with glaring bulbs, and eerie red emergency lights cast a sinister glow.

As Grace navigates the clinic, she collects familiar survival gear: a lighter to light her way through darkness, a screwdriver essential for unscrewing a critical bolt, and a fuse needed to unlock a gate. Healing supplies like green herbs are scattered throughout, staying true to the series’ classic resource management.

Tension spikes when Grace stumbles upon a lifeless body, intensifying her urgent need to understand her predicament and find an escape. The suspense escalates further when a massive, silent creature suddenly appears, ominously leaning over Grace’s shoulder to bite into the corpse she just discovered, delivering a chilling moment of horror.

The colossal creature immediately brought to mind the terrifying mother figure from Zach Cregger’s Barbarian, but it stands apart from the usual relentless Resident Evil pursuers. This beast emits chilling screeches as it hunts Grace, yet it harbors a distinct vulnerability: light. Grace can find safety in well-lit rooms, where the monster ceases its chase temporarily. However, it doesn’t give up easily; it silently stalks her by moving through ceilings and air ducts, signaling its presence with ominous thuds, falling debris, and eerie wails.

Often, this formidable foe blocks the path between Grace’s puzzle-solving tools and the puzzles themselves. Navigating this threat requires stealth and caution, especially when Grace must maneuver noisy objects like a rattling medical cart to reach essential items. Any accidental clatter draws the monster’s attention, heightening the tension.

Grace emerges as a genuinely relatable protagonist throughout the demo. Her fearful cries and realistic reactions to the bizarre and frightening hospital environment make her feel authentic. Her vocal performance stands out as one of the best in the Resident Evil series, which is notable given the franchise’s history of uneven dialogue delivery.

I experienced the Resident Evil Requiem demo twice: once using the classic third-person perspective and again from a first-person viewpoint. Both perspectives deliver a unique brand of terror. In first-person, seeing Grace’s shadow flicker on the walls sparked genuine unease, while the third-person view provided a chilling sense of vulnerability as she narrowly escaped becoming the creature’s prey. These elements confirm that the horror foundation of Resident Evil Requiem is robust, promising the intense fear Capcom aims to deliver. Even if the famed Leon S. Kennedy appears as a playable character, Grace’s sequences seem poised to provide the gripping suspense and “addictive fear” fans crave.

Set to release on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, Resident Evil Requiem offers hope that players will get to experience this compelling demo well before launch.
