ATMs equipped with biometric scanners can identify a customer based on a unique physiological trait, such as their fingerprint, palm vein pattern, or even facial recognition. Once the customer's identity is verified biometrically against the bank's secure database, they can access their accounts and perform transactions directly on the ATM screen. This technology offers an unparalleled level of security, as biometric data is virtually impossible to steal or replicate in the same way as a physical card or a PIN. While the rollout of biometric ATMs is more gradual due to the higher cost of the hardware, it represents a significant future direction for the industry, promising a truly frictionless and highly secure cash access experience. Financial institutions (banks and credit unions) are the primary drivers of adoption, as they seek to enhance customer experience, improve security, and reduce fraud-related costs. They are responsible for developing and producing the new machines or the upgrade kits (e.g., NFC readers, QR scanners) that make cardless transactions possible. Their innovation in hardware is critical to the market's expansion. The third, and arguably most dynamic, group is the software and fintech companies. This includes core banking software providers like FIS and Fiserv, as well as a host of specialized mobile banking and security startups that develop the applications, authentication platforms, and secure communication protocols that power the entire cardless transaction from the user's phone to the bank's central servers.
