MMOexp POE: While Elementalist remains one of the strongest Ignite ascendancies
Patch 3.29 introduces Drogue's Lantern, a new Unique Shield that creates one of the most interesting ignite mechanics added in recent leagues. Rather than fitting neatly into existing meta builds, it encourages players to experiment with a new playstyle that feels similar to POE currency Righteous Fire—but functions very differently.

The shield offers modest defensive stats, including life and block chance, but its real value comes from three offensive modifiers:
Ignites you inflict damage faster.
Ignited enemies create Drogue Flames after being ignited.
Drogue Flames burn nearby enemies for 8 seconds.
Together, these effects allow a single Ignite to spread constant burning damage around your character, creating what many players are already calling an "Unrighteous Fire"*build.
How Drogue Flames Work
Ignite Once, Burn Everything Nearby
Unlike Righteous Fire, which constantly damages nearby enemies, Drogue's Lantern requires you to ignite a target first.
After an enemy is ignited, Drogue Flames activate for eight seconds, causing nearby enemies within roughly three meters to take burning damage. The result is an aura-like effect that follows your character while you continue mapping.
This creates a gameplay loop of:
1. Ignite an enemy.
2. Trigger Drogue Flames.
3. Run through packs while nearby monsters burn automatically.
4. Refresh the effect with another Ignite.
It feels familiar to RF players while maintaining Ignite's scaling mechanics.
Faster Ignite Is a Major Damage Boost
The shield also grants Ignites deal damage 20% faster, an uncommon modifier that compresses your Ignite damage into a shorter duration without reducing its total damage.
This improves clear speed and burst damage, making enemies die sooner while keeping Ignite as the primary scaling mechanic.
Which Builds Benefit the Most?
Chieftain Is the Clear Winner
Among current ascendancies, Chieftain appears to gain the most from Drogue's Lantern.
The shield naturally complements Hinekora Death's Fury, whose explosions deal massive Fire Damage based on monster life. When those explosions Ignite enemies, Drogue Flames can spread additional burning damage throughout nearby packs.
The combination creates chain reactions that resemble RF mapping while retaining Ignite scaling and explosion mechanics.
Existing RF Builds Can Experiment
Traditional Righteous Fire Chieftains may choose to replace a defensive shield with Drogue's Lantern for a more offensive version.
The tradeoff is clear:
Higher Ignite damage
Better explosion chaining
Faster mapping potential
In exchange, you'll lose some defensive power that conventional RF shields provide. Players comfortable sacrificing survivability for speed may find the new shield worthwhile.
Elementalist Is Less Appealing
While Elementalist remains one of the strongest Ignite ascendancies, Drogue's Lantern isn't an obvious upgrade.
Elementalist typically prefers:
Powerful caster weapons
Defensive shields
Long-range Ignite gameplay
Because Drogue Flames encourage staying close to enemies, the shield doesn't naturally complement most existing Elementalist builds.
Should You Use Sadism Support?
The interaction between Drogue's Lantern and Sadism Support looks attractive on paper because both increase how quickly Ignite damage is dealt.
However, Sadism dramatically reduces Ignite duration, forcing constant reapplication to maintain damage. While the combination can produce higher burst DPS, it significantly lowers overall Ignite uptime.
For cheap Path of exile currency most builds, standard Ignite support gems will likely produce smoother gameplay unless your build is specifically designed around frequent reapplication.
