The transition from conventional transformers to power electronic transformers (PETs), more commonly known as solid-state transformers, represents a fundamental shift in electrical engineering. At their core, SSTs replace the passive iron-core and copper windings of a traditional transformer with a sophisticated, multi-stage power electronics topology. This allows for digital control over voltage, frequency, and power flow, unlocking capabilities that are impossible with conventional technology. The Architecture of an SST

A solid-state transformer typically consists of three primary conversion stages:

  1. AC to DC: The incoming medium-voltage AC power is rectified to DC.

  2. DC to DC (Isolated): The DC voltage is converted to a high-frequency AC, passed through a compact medium-frequency transformer for isolation and voltage scaling, and then rectified back to DC. This is the core of the SST, where SiC and GaN semiconductors operate at frequencies 10-100x higher than the 50/60 Hz line frequency, drastically reducing the size of the magnetic components.

  3. DC to AC: The output DC is converted back to the desired AC voltage and frequency, or left as DC for applications like EV charging or DC microgrids.

This architecture, enabled by medium frequency solid state transformer designs, allows for bidirectional power flow, real-time voltage regulation, and reactive power compensation. The medium-voltage equipment segment accounted for 59.55% of the market in 2025, reflecting the focus on distribution grid applications.

The Role of Wide-Bandgap Semiconductors

The viability of SSTs hinges on the performance of wide-bandgap (WBG) semiconductors, particularly silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN). These materials can switch at much higher frequencies, voltages, and temperatures than traditional silicon, enabling the compact, efficient designs that make SSTs practical. The SiC power electronics cost trajectory is a critical market driver, with device-level costs projected to drop significantly as manufacturing scales. The Distribution SST segment held the largest share at 43.70% in 2025, driven by heavy utility investment in grid-edge distribution upgrades.

The development of standardized IEEE and IEC type-test standards will remove a key barrier for utilities. The integration of digital twin and AI-driven predictive maintenance will enhance reliability and reduce operational costs. As the technology matures, power electronic transformers will become the cornerstone of the intelligent, flexible grid of the future, securing their central place in the Solid State Transformer Market.
